DJ: Should we take dreaming seriously?
Bráulio Amado
Bráulio is graphic designer and illustrator from Portugal, living in New York City. Restlessly prolific, his visual output spans posters, editorial, spatial installations, moving image and more. The first edition DreamJams owe their visual hypnosis to Bráulio's imagination, created by hand in a state of mind wandering freedom.
BA: No. I mean, last night I had a dream that I owned a theme park for dogs.
DJ: How do you stop yourself from getting bored?
BA: I’m trying to learn how to enjoy boredom. I have always been afraid of getting *bored* and that’s sort of why most times I do work in a bit of a maniac output, or I’m constantly doodling and thinking about projects, or new stuff I could be doing. There’s nothing wrong with being bored and I have been trying to enjoy those times as something to relax without feeling bad.
DJ: How did you create the DreamJams Edition 1 artwork?
BA: I quite often draw on my sketchbook these sort of weird abstract psychedelic shapes. There’s no concept to it, nor a proper direction. I try to put myself into this sort of dreamy or meditative state and see what comes out. So I felt like this was the right project to use some of these drawings and turn them into ‘jams.
DJ: Is America a safe place for dreamers?
Ha. Clearly not, specially if you are a DACA dreamer.
DJ: What makes your heart ache?
BA: Portuguese Pão de Deus.
DJ: Are you working too much?
Sadly yes and a bit ashamed for saying it.
DJ: Who are you proud to be surrounded by?
My boyfriend and friends, and all these talented artists that inspire me. ●
